NEWTON'S LAW OF MOTION WEBQUEST

Introduction: We have been studying about Sir Isaac Newton for a while now.  Not only did he come up with the Universal Law of Gravitation which states that any two objects exert a gravitational force of attraction on each other, he also came up with his 3 Laws of Motion.   These three laws of motion have helped many different work fields grow and develop. The three Laws of Motion are:

1.     * An object at rest will stay at rest unless acted on by a force.

        * An object moving in a straight line will continue to move in a straight line unless acted on by another force.

        * The first law of motion is also called the law of Inertia.

2.    * How fast an object moves after it is pushed depends on the force of the push and the mass of the object.
               * Force = mass X acceleration
                        F = ma

3.    * For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Task: With the new age of technology and the internet, there are many opportunities for exploring these laws of motion. I have done research to find websites where you can explore these laws of motion. I challenge you to find three ways in which the laws of motion play a factor in your everyday life. After you have discovered these ways make a poster, cartoon, piece of writing, skit, or another creative way of showing the way the laws of motion impact your life.

To get even more information, use these key words with search engines such as Google or Yahoo:
Sir Isaac Newton          Laws of Motion         Velocity            Force

Process:

1)      Day One = You should use this period to do your own research on Newton’s Laws of Motions and become familiar with all 3 of his laws and compare/contrast what they mean.

2)    Day Two = You will get together with your group, discuss what you  learned and begin your creative project.

3)    Day Three = You will continue working on your creative project.  This is your last day to work on this…so make it a good day!

Questions:

     1) What does Newton’s Law of Motion #1 state?

    2) How does Newton’s First Law of Motion relate to your life?

     3) What does Newton’s Law of Motion #2 state?

4)    How does Newton’s Second Law of Motion relate to your life?

5)    What does Newton’s Law of Motion #3 state?

6)    How does Newton’s Third Law of Motion relate to your life?

Conclusion:  At the end of this webquest, you will have created a wonderful masterpiece that will be presented to the class on Newton Day (date to be announced).  Get Creative and Have fun!!!
